Operational rule vidhi

The verb root 'हा' is converted to ह्रस्व-इकार when followed by हलादि-सार्वधातुक कित्/ङित्-प्रत्यय.

Pāṇini leaves out words that carry over from earlier sūtras. Expand to see the rule as a reader actually understands it.

Commentary

इ is optionally substituted for the आ of हा (जुहोत्यादिगणः (3rd Conjugation)) before a सार्वधातुक affix कित् or ङित् beginning with a consonant.
Thus जहितः or जहीतः 6.4.113 जहिथः or जहीथः 6.4.113. But जहति before a vowel affix, and जहाति before a non-ङित् affix, an हीयते and जिहीयते before an ardhadhatuka. The separation of this sutra from the last, is for the sake of subsequent aphorisms.
