Operational rule vidhi

The दकार of the word इदम् is converted to a मकार when followed by a विभक्तिप्रत्यय.

Word by word (padaccheda)

Target दः ṣaṣṭhī · ekavacanaIndeclinable च avyaya

Target Ṣaṣṭhī (6th case): names what gets replaced, "in place of X" (1.1.49 षष्ठी स्थानेयोगा).
Indeclinable An avyaya such as च "and", वा "optionally", न "not".

Commentary

म् is substituted for the द् of इदम् before a विभक्ति affix.
As इमौ, इमे, इमम्, इमौ, इमान् ॥ Thus इदम् + अम् = इदअ + अम् 7.2.102 = इमअ + अम् 7.2.109 = इमम् 6.1.97, 6.1.107.
