Commentary

The ए or ओ retain their original form in the middle of a Vedic verse, when the following words come after them (though the अ in these has a व् and य् following it) - अव्यात् , अवद्यात् , अवक्रमुः , अव्रत , अवन्तु , अवस्यु।
(Not in the Rig Veda). Prof. Bohtlingk gives the following examples from the Rig Veda:- सीक्षन्तो आश्रतम् (VI.14.3), संदहन्ता अव्रतान् (IX. 73.5), कर्ते अव्रतान् (IX. 73.8). (Not in the Rig Veda: according to Prof. Bohtlingk the अ of अवन्तु is generally elided in the Veda after ए or आ) कुशिकासो अवस्यवः (Rig III.42.9).
