Operational rule vidhi
When an अध्याय or अनुवाक is to be expressed there is लुक् elision of the affix छ (ईय) having the sense of मतुप् -- तदस्यास्त्यस्मिन्निति मतुप् (5.2.94).

Commentary
When an अध्याय or अनुवाक is to be expressed there is लुक् elision of the affix छ (ईय) having the sense of मतुप् -- तदस्यास्त्यस्मिन्निति मतुप् 5.2.94.
This sutra indicates by implication (ज्ञापकः), that the affix छ comes after a nominal stem, to denote an Adhyaya or an Anuvaka. According to Patanjali the elision is optional. Thus गर्दभाण्ड शब्दोऽस्मिन्नस्ति = गर्दभाण्डोऽध्यायः, अनुवाको वा ॥ In the alternative, गर्दभाण्डीयः; so also दीर्घजीवितः or दीर्घजीवतीयः, पलितस्तम्भः or पलितस्तम्भीयः ॥
