Commentary
The feminine affix ङीष् comes after a प्रातिपदिक (Nominal Stem) ending with the word वाह्।
The anuvritti of ङीष् is to be taken in this aphorism and not that of ङीप्, though the latter was nearer. The word वाह् is formed from the root वाह् with the affix ण्वि 3.2.64. The word वाह् is never found alone, but as ends of compounds, hence we apply the rule of tadanta, and have translated it by saying a "word ending in vah." Thus दित्यौही 'sustaining the demon'. This form is thus evolved :- दित्य + वाह् + ङीष् = दित्य + ऊठ् + आह् + ङीष् (6.4.132 वाह ऊठ्, Uth is the samprasarana of vah, when this is a bha) = दित्य + ऊह् + ङीष् 6.1.108 संप्रसारणाच्च 'after a samprasarana if a vowel follow, the form of the prior is the single substitute'), = दित्यौही (6.1.89 एत्येधत्यूठ्सु 'vriddhi is the single substitute when eti, edhati or uth follow'). Similarly प्रष्ठौही 'a young heifer training for the plough.'
