Operational rule vidhi

The word युज् gets नुमागम in presence of a सर्वनामस्थान. However, if this word is in a समस्तपद, then the नुमागम does not happen.

Target Ṣaṣṭhī (6th case): names what gets replaced, "in place of X" (1.1.49 षष्ठी स्थानेयोगा).
Right context Saptamī (7th case): "when X follows", the operation applies to what precedes (1.1.66 तस्मिन्निति निर्दिष्टे पूर्वस्य). Also a condition or domain ("in the sense of").

Pāṇini leaves out words that carry over from earlier sūtras. Expand to see the rule as a reader actually understands it.

Commentary

The प्रातिपदिक (Nominal Stem) युज् before the strong cases gets the augment (नुम्) न् when it does not stand in a compound.
Thus युङ् 8.2.23, 8.2.62 युञ्जौ, युञ्जः; but अश्वयुक्, अश्वयुजौ, अश्वयुजः in a compound. The root युज समाधौ (Divadi 68) is not to be taken here; therefore not here युजमापन्ना ऋषयः ॥ But युजिर् योगे (Rudhadi 7) is to be taken.
